Dear Raymond Tynes,
Thank you for your email dated March 18, 2021 regarding the COVID-19 vaccine roll out for African Nova Scotian communities. As Senior Executive Director responsible for Public Health, Mental Health and Addictions, and Acute Care in Nova Scotia, the Premier has asked me to respond on his behalf.
I understand the difficulties that many individuals and families are facing during this time. Our teams are working very hard to protect Nova Scotians against COVID-19. This is the biggest and most complex vaccination program our province has ever seen.
We are working closely with trusted community leaders to plan COVID-19 vaccine clinics in African Nova Scotian communities. The first vaccine clinic will be held at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Upper Hammonds Plains on April 8. This clinic is for members of the community who are 55 and older. The Association of Black Social Workers will be calling people directly to book appointments. Another clinic is planned for the Preston Township at the New Beginnings Ministry on April 13 and 14, and planning is underway for clinics in other African Nova Scotian communities and will be shared once finalized. There is also a community clinic open at the Nova Scotia Community College campus in Truro. At this time, Nova Scotians who are age 70 and older are able to book an appointment at a community clinic. More age groups will be announced as we immunize those who are 70 and older and vaccine supply increases.
There will be a lot of communication as the vaccine rolls out to ensure Nova Scotians know when they may be able to get immunized. We ask everyone to please be patient and watch for updates. In the meantime, we ask Nova Scotians to continue to be vigilant about the public health measures. At least for the initial phases of rolling out the vaccine, we still need to wear a mask, stay 2 metres/6 feet apart from others, practice proper hand hygiene, follow gathering limits, and stay home if you’re sick.
Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns.
Sincerely,
Vanessa Chouinard
