Emancipation Day

Media Release Nova Scotia has officially designated August 1st as Emancipation Day in acknowledgement of our shared history of the enslavement of people of Afrikan ancestry here in Canada. Emancipation Day reflects on this shared history and acknowledges the strength and perseverance of Black people in Canada.
